A Russian court imposed a fine of 2 million roubles ($22,254) on Amazon, the U.S. e-commerce behemoth, for its continued failure to eliminate content deemed illegal. This comes as the latest in a series of penalties against Amazon in Russia, highlighting the ongoing legal challenges faced by the company in the country.
Despite previous fines, Amazon remains entangled in legal disputes with Russian authorities. On January 17, the court levied a hefty 200 million rouble fine against the company for its absence of a physical presence within Russia, signaling the country’s insistence on compliance with local business regulations. Additionally, in October, Amazon received a 4 million rouble fine for its failure to promptly remove prohibited content.
The Russian court’s decision to impose these fines underscores the government’s commitment to enforcing content removal policies and ensuring that foreign companies adhere to local regulations. Amazon’s repeated violations have sparked concerns about its ability to navigate and comply with the complex legal landscape in Russia.
