Hyundai Motor Co and its affiliate Kia Corp have revealed plans to recall nearly 170,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in South Korea following the discovery of software issues in the charging systems, as confirmed by South Korea’s transport ministry on Thursday.
The recall will affect approximately 169,332 EVs from Hyundai, including five models from the Ioniq-series and Genesis lineup. Additionally, Kia will recall 56,016 EVs.
According to the ministry, errors have been detected in the software of the integrated charging control units used in these Hyundai and Kia EVs. These errors could potentially hinder the charging of a low-voltage battery, increasing the risk of the vehicles stopping unexpectedly while in motion.
In response to the issue, Hyundai Motor Group issued a statement affirming their commitment to customer safety and announced their intention to take swift measures to address the problem and minimize customer inconvenience.
The voluntary recall is scheduled to commence on March 18, with both Hyundai and Kia prioritizing the safety of their customers and vehicles throughout the process.
