Apple confirmed the removal of Meta’s WhatsApp messaging app and Threads social media app from the Chinese App Store, citing compliance with directives from Chinese authorities. The decision followed unspecified national security concerns raised by Chinese officials, amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and China encompassing trade, technology, and national security.
While the U.S. has contemplated banning TikTok over similar concerns, popular apps like WhatsApp and Threads, unlike TikTok, aren’t widely adopted in China. WeChat, owned by Chinese tech giant Tencent, remains the dominant messaging app within the country. Despite the removal, other Meta-owned apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger remain accessible for download, although their use within China is impeded by the nation’s restrictive “Great Firewall.”
In its statement, Apple acknowledged complying with the Cyberspace Administration of China’s directive, emphasizing its commitment to adhering to local laws despite any disagreements. Meta has yet to comment on the matter.
Apple’s stature in the smartphone market has faced challenges, notably losing its top position to Samsung Electronics. In China, a crucial market for Apple, sales have declined following government directives prohibiting the use of Apple devices by certain agencies and state-owned company employees. Apple has been strategizing diversification of its manufacturing bases beyond China.
CEO Tim Cook’s recent visits to Southeast Asian nations, including Hanoi, Jakarta, and Singapore, underscore Apple’s regional interests. Notably, during Cook’s meeting with Singapore’s deputy prime minister, Lawrence Wong, discussions centered on Apple’s investment plans in the city-state, with a commitment exceeding $250 million for campus expansion.
Cook’s engagements in Vietnam and Indonesia involved discussions on potential collaborations to bolster local manufacturing, aligning with respective government initiatives. Cook expressed Apple’s openness to exploring manufacturing opportunities in these countries.
