The FBI has launched a criminal investigation into the devastating collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, focusing on the events leading up to it and whether federal laws were adhered to, as per a source familiar with the matter. The individual, speaking anonymously to The Associated Press, revealed the ongoing inquiry.
Revealing further details, the FBI confirmed its presence aboard the cargo ship Dali, engaged in lawful enforcement activities, according to a statement released on Monday.
The Washington Post initially broke the news of the investigation. Meanwhile, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott announced a collaborative effort with two law firms to take legal action and hold accountable those responsible for the tragedy, aiming to mitigate the impact on city residents.
The incident occurred when the container ship Dali, bound for Sri Lanka, collided with one of the bridge’s supporting columns on March 26. This collision caused a section of the bridge to collapse into the Patapsco River, resulting in the deaths of six roadwork crew members. Despite recovery efforts, three victims remain missing.
National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy highlighted investigations into the ship’s electrical power system, particularly focusing on power issues preceding the crash. Video evidence shows fluctuations in the ship’s lights moments before the collision. Homendy emphasized the importance of data retrieved from the vessel’s voyage recorder, stating it would significantly aid investigations.
Baltimore’s recent statement expressed a commitment to holding all responsible parties accountable for the tragedy. This includes pursuing legal action against the ship’s owner, charterer, operator, manufacturer, and any other potentially liable entities.
Mayor Scott emphasized the need for swift action, especially with the ship’s owner seeking to limit liability shortly after the incident. The city vows to prioritize support for those impacted while seeking recourse from those deemed responsible.
