It turns out that Barack Obama and Kamala Harris, the vice president, can agree on at least one thing.
In a statement released on Saturday, Harris said she agreed with Trump’s idea to get rid of taxes on tips.
Harris promised everyone at a campaign rally in Las Vegas on Saturday night, “When I am president, we will continue to fight for working families.” She said this by saying that they would raise the minimum wage and get rid of taxes on tips for service and restaurant workers.
That idea hits home for service workers in Nevada in a big way. On Friday, a kitchen union that represents 60,000 Nevada workers backed Harris. The hospitality union Unite Here had already backed Harris.
Early this summer, Trump promised the same thing at a gathering in Las Vegas: “When I get to office, we are not going to charge taxes on tips.”
Trump complained right away that Harris was using his idea without his permission. “TRUMP came up with this idea. She doesn’t have any ideas, she can only steal mine,” he said on Truth Social.
Getting rid of taxes on tips isn’t as easy as making a campaign promise, though. Congress would have to agree to this change to the tax rules, which could be a tough sell no matter who wins the White House.
