The US Open is going on right now in Queens. This year’s prize pool of $75 million is the largest ever for a tennis event.
That’s 15% more than the $65 million that was offered at last year’s US Open, and 2024 will be the 51st year in a row that the prize money for men and women will be the same.
The prize money is based on the round you reach until the final, where the winner gets twice as much as the loser.
The singles players can expect to make the following amount of money over the next two weeks:
Round | Prize |
First Round | $100,000 |
Second Round | $140,000 |
Third Round | $215,000 |
Round of 16 | $325,000 |
Quarterfinals | $530,000 |
Semifinals | $1,000,000 |
Runner-Up | $1,800,000 |
Winner | $3,600,000 |
In 2024, the US Open has a bigger total prize pool than any of the other three Grand Slam events. Based on how much money was worth at the times of the tournaments, Wimbledon gave away about $64 million in prize money, while the French Open and Australian Open each gave away about $58 million.
In the last few years, the prize money for competitive tennis has grown a lot. For example, $25.5 million was given away in prizes at the 2012 US Open.
At the US Open last year, Coco Gauff won her first Grand Slam event, and Novak Djokovic won his 24th. This made him the male tennis player with the most Grand Slam titles ever.
If a player usually plays in smaller tournaments where the prizes aren’t worth much, making it to even the first round of a Grand Slam event like the US Open can be a big bonus.
This year, Australian player Li Tu had won $90,253 in prize money and was placed No. 186 in the world going into the US Open. He got into the event by beating three other players in the qualifying rounds. Then he lost in the first round of the US Open, but the $100,000 prize more than doubled his yearly income.
The men’s doubles champions right now are Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury. The women’s doubles champions last year were Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe.
Here is how much money will be given out in the 2024 US Open for men’s and women’s doubles.
Round | Prize |
First Round | $25,000 |
Second Round | $40,000 |
Third Round | $63,000 |
Quarterfinals | $110,000 |
Semifinals | $190,000 |
Runner-Up | $375,000 |
Winner | $750,000 |
The US Open women’s final will be on Sept. 7, and the men’s final will be on Sept. 8. They’ll be shown on ESPN DIS-1.55%
