Amid the ongoing Ukraine crisis, Russia’s foreign ministry has publicly criticized Western ambassadors in Moscow, alleging their interference in Russia’s internal affairs. The accusations raise questions about the role and conduct of these envoys during a critical diplomatic period.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed dismay at European Union ambassadors’ refusal to meet him ahead of Russia’s upcoming presidential election. The incident, coupled with EU ambassadors attending the funeral of opposition figure Alexei Navalny, prompted Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova to question the ambassadors’ purpose on Russian soil.
During a state television interview, Zakharova emphasized the discrepancy between the ambassadors’ actions and their diplomatic responsibilities. She suggested that their behavior indicated meddling in Russia’s affairs rather than fulfilling their diplomatic duties.
The television show’s headline provocatively questioned whether EU ambassadors should be expelled, underscoring the escalating tensions between Russia and Western diplomatic representatives.
In a separate development, Russia issued a warning to Germany over a leaked audio recording of German military officials discussing support for Ukraine. The Russian foreign ministry summoned Germany’s ambassador, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, seeking clarification on the discussions and alleging German interference in the activities of Russian journalists in Germany.
Maria Zakharova further cautioned against any restrictions on Russian correspondents, stating that if implemented, German journalists would be asked to leave Russia. The series of diplomatic incidents highlights the complex and strained relations between Russia and Western nations amid the unfolding events in Ukraine.
