Shares of Costco are up about 2% so far this year. Another month, another sales gain for Costco Wholesale Corp. For the four weeks ending Nov. 2, Costco had sales of $21.75 billion, the membership warehouse retailer said Wednesday. That marked an increase of 8.6%. Total same-store sales for the month were up 6.6%. Digital sales rose 16.6%. Costco shares (COST) slipped 0.8% after hours on Wednesday. As of Wednesday’s close, the stock was up about 2% so far this year. Some analysts have worried that that Costco’s biggest gains might be in the rearview, after price increases over the…
Although Jerome Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve, shook the bond market, investors had cause for optimism. The U.S. Treasury market’s positive year-end seasonality could help investors get over their dissatisfaction with Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s statement that a rate cut in December is “not a foregone conclusion.” The odds of a rate decrease in December were approximately 90%, according to the CME’s FedWatch Tool, before to Powell’s press conference last week. The current odds are 72%. The fact that the Treasury market shows a rather regular seasonal pattern, with prices peaking in the late fall and bottoming in…
Jared Isaacman, the founder of Shift4 Payments, has traveled to space twice with SpaceX. He accomplished the first commercial spacewalk in 2024. President Donald Trump has nominated tech millionaire Jared Isaacman to manage NASA for the second time, putting him back in the running. For Elon Musk, who has criticized NASA’s current commander for plans to reopen a significant federal contract given to his SpaceX, this is wonderful news. With backing from the industry, Isaacman, the creator of Shift4 Payments (FOUR), a payment processing startup, was initially nominated last year. However, following a brief spat with Musk in May, Trump…
Dollar Tree Inc. said Monday that Rick Dreiling has quit as CEO of the discount store chain because of health issues. But even though shares went up because of the company’s outlook for the third quarter, an expert said the change in leadership comes at a bad time for the business. This is because dollar stores are facing more competition and problems from a possible Trump presidency. Michael Creedon, who is currently the company’s COO, has been named Dollar Tree’s DLTR -0.54% temporary CEO while the board looks for a permanent replacement. Dollar Tree said that both internal and external…
Just days before the U.S. election on Tuesday, Wall Street is still on edge. But it looks like some traders are betting ahead of time that there will be a relief rise once the vote counts are in. In other words, on Friday, more put options tied to the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX -4.46%), which is known as Wall Street’s “fear gauge,” were traded than call options. According to data from FactSet, by the time the market ended, more puts were bought than calls. This was the biggest difference seen in four years. That means that a lot of traders…
To Quentin, My husband and I have been married for more than 25 years. Our marriage is respectful, happy, and healthy most of the time. However, we don’t always agree on everything. Over the years, we’ve had lively and interesting conversations about both domestic and foreign government policy. Our home has been tense during this election season. I think he will vote for Trump 99% of the time, but we haven’t talked about it yet. We won’t be able to go to the polls at the same time on Tuesday because of our plans. Should I tell him I’m voting…
The U.S. Federal Reserve will almost certainly keep cutting the base federal funds rate. They will likely do so not only this week, but also at their meeting in December. This is because short-term U.S. interest rates will likely be lower on Inauguration Day in 2025 than they were on Election Day. This guess is not based on any predictions about prices or changes in the job market. The reason for this is that short-term interest rates tend to stay in the same direction for at least a few months after the U.S. election. Since short-term rates are much lower…
Following the market close on Monday, Hims & Hers Health Inc. stock went up after the company raised its sales forecast for the whole year. This is because the company is continuing to attract customers by providing more personalized care and weight-loss drugs. As a result, drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic become very famous very quickly, which makes it harder to get them and makes the competition tougher. On Monday, executives said that the problems with supply were “not going away” and that it was still hard to get “consistent supply.” Hims & Hers HIMS -0.18%, which sells medicines for…
It looks like everything is fine at the Federal Reserve. Economists think that Fed Chair Jerome Powell and his colleagues will mostly agree on a decision next Thursday to lower the benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point, to a range of 4.5% to 4.75%. This comes after the first cut of half a point in September. It’s unlikely that the policy statement that came out with the result will change much. The Fed wants to slowly lower interest rates because they believe that monetary policy is too tight. But economists say that deep down, there will be heated…
