“Trump is going to win the elections next month, which will be good for the U.S. stock markets,” Daniel Loeb’s hedge fund Third Point wrote in a letter to clients during the third quarter. Third Point told investors that it thinks Trump’s “America First” policies will lead to more manufacturing in the U.S. and more spending on infrastructure, which will make some materials and goods more expensive. The hedge fund was founded by Daniel Loeb in 1995. It said that Trump’s policies to loosen regulations will also “unleash productivity and a wave of corporate activity” in the U.S., and that…

Shares of Netflix Inc. are going up sharply on Friday, which is a sign of optimism about user gains that were better than expected in the third quarter. There were other good things in Netflix’s NFLX 10.27% most recent earnings report, but Barton Crockett of Rosenblatt Securities thinks that the company’s better-than-expected performance on paid net gains was “the main growth positive” that came out of the report. It’s important to remember that investors won’t be able to praise or criticize subscriber success for much longer. Netflix is not going to post paid net gains every month after its report…

Universities and schools in the U.S. have started to report the returns on their endowments for the last fiscal year, and it’s not a good look. The “U.S. Endowment Returns Tracker” from Pensions & Investments says that the average return for those who have reported so far is 10.4% for the year ending June 30, 2018. The S&P 500 SPX gained 24.6%, which is less than half of that (0.42% through June 30). This isn’t a completely fair comparison, but it’s also not too bad either, since most endowments aren’t involved in stocks all the time. The average grant also…

It is not clear if Donald Trump or Kamala Harris will be in the White House in January. There is more and more evidence that the election could lead to a rush of deals, no matter what the result is. The big banks, like Citigroup C 2.57%, Goldman Sachs GS 1.43%, and JPMorgan Chase JPM 0.56%, would be happy about that. An example from the past is one reason. Deals to join and buy other businesses have tended to slow down in the third quarter, right before an election, and pick up in the fourth. Mergermarket says that in three…

Investors think that Boeing BA 1.67% will almost certainly sell some of its shares. They don’t know when, how much, or what price a sale is. You can, however, come up with useful ranges for those factors. A capital raise should be good for Boeing’s stock if it can hit its goals. Reuters reported on Wednesday that Boeing was almost ready to issue $15 billion in stock and hybrid debt securities. The company needs the money to fix its balance sheet, which had more than $50 billion in long-term debt at the end of the second quarter. Wall Street investors…

After a report showed that U.K. inflation fell sharply to its lowest level in more than three years, traders increased their bets that the Bank of England would cut interest rates. This caused the British pound to drop below $1.30 and government bond yields to drop. On Wednesday, the Office for National Statistics said that the U.K. consumer price index rose 1.7% over the past year, which is less than the 2.2% rise seen in August. The ONS said that cheaper petrol and flights were the main reasons why inflation was slowing down. Inflation fell below the Bank of England’s…
