As 2024 came to a close, Chinese companies that make electric vehicles had good sales, according to new information from BYD Co. Ltd, Nio Inc., Li Auto Inc., and XPeng Inc.
The numbers come at a time when China is in the middle of a price war for electric cars. The electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD BYDDY -2.16% said in a statement that it sold 514,809 EVs in December 2024, up from 341,043 EVs in December 2023. The competitor to Tesla Inc. TSLA -4.81% sold 4,272,145 cars in 2024, more than the 3,024,417 it sold the year before.
Nio NIO +4.12%, a business based in Shanghai, said it delivered 31,138 vehicles in December. This was a 72.9% increase year-over-year and a new monthly delivery record for the company. Nio said in a statement that it had delivered 20,610 cars from its high-end smart EV brand Nio and 10,528 cars from its family-friendly smart EV brand ONVO. Nio shipped 221,970 cars in 2024, which is 38.7% more than the previous year.
Li LI +2.83% said in a statement that it shipped 58,513 cars in December, which is 16.2% more than the same month last year and a new monthly high. In 2024, the company delivered 500,508 cars, bringing the total number of cars it has ever supplied to 1,133,872.
A filing shows that XPeng XPEV -2.11% delivered 36,695 vehicles in December. That’s an 82% rise from the same month last year. The company also said that the number was 19% higher than the previous month.
