COLLEVILLE-SUR-MER, France — Ahead of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, U.S. President Joe Biden met with American veterans.
Help was given to veterans who could stand up so they could take pictures with the president and first lady Jill Biden. Someone gave Biden a hug. Someone else saluted. In honour of a veteran’s birthday, Biden asked the president to lead the crowd in singing “Happy Birthday.”

Robert Gibson is another veteran. The first lady grabbed his arm to help him stand next to Biden while they shook hands. “Don’t get old,” the 100-year-old joked to the president, who was only 81 years old at the time of D-Day.
Steve Spielberg and Tom Hanks, two of Hollywood’s biggest names who have worked on films and TV shows about WWII, were nearby.
