The United Nations — Wednesday, more than two years into Russia’s war, Ukraine’s president asked world leaders to stand with his country and not look for “an out” instead of a “real, just peace.”
As President Volodymyr Zelensky comes under more and more pressure from Western allies and some Ukrainians to discuss a cease-fire, he told the U.N. General Assembly that there is no other way to go than the “peace formula” he put forward two years ago. As one of its goals, it wants all Russian troops to leave Ukraine and those responsible for war crimes to be held responsible.
He said, “Any other or parallel attempts to seek peace are actually attempts to find a way out of the war instead of ending it.”
At a campaign event this week, Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president for the third straight year, talked about how good Russia has been at fighting and winning wars in the past. He also said again that he would work to end the conflict in Ukraine right away, which started when Russia invaded its neighbor in February 2022.
Some people say that Trump wouldn’t stop a deal that favored the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
It was said that Zelensky was going to meet with Trump while he was in the U.S. this week, but it looks like that meeting is no longer on Trump’s schedule. NBC said Zelensky had said that Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, Trump’s running mate, was too extreme, which led to the meeting being canceled.
Vance has said in public before that it didn’t matter to him how the war in Ukraine turned out.
When Zelensky spoke to the General Assembly, he begged, “Do not split the world.” “United countries. That will make us all happy.
