The worst might not be over yet, but egg prices are going through the roof.
As of now, a dozen eggs cost 35% more than they did in June. In the coming months, prices may go up even more.
Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that the price of eggs went up from $2.70 per dozen in May to $3.65 per dozen in November.
That price, though, makes it hard to get eggs.
There aren’t enough eggs in most shops, so prices are often much higher, especially for fancy types like cage-free or organic eggs.
The cost of a dozen eggs in the Washington, D.C., area is between $4.59 and $7.49. There aren’t many of the cheaper eggs left, though.
What’s the matter? The blame lies with yet another large case of the bird flu, which is very easy to spread.
By law, farms have to kill whole groups of chickens when one gets the disease, sometimes millions of them at once.
On top of that, there aren’t enough eggs right now because the holidays are starting. In the holiday season, when people bake and cook more, demand goes up.
The issue might last for at least a few months. The price of eggs at the wholesale level went up by 56% in November. In December and January, prices may go up even more.
Egg fans can take comfort in the fact that prices probably won’t go as high as the record $4.82 a dozen set in early 2023.
Americans are upset about more than just the price of eggs. The cost of beef has also gone up a lot.
In September, the price of a pound of ground beef hit a new high.
The cost of food went up the most in November in almost two years because of higher prices for eggs and beef.
Also, the price of food at market rose 3.1% in November, which was the biggest increase in two years.
When food prices went up this quickly before, it was because of eggs and the bird flu.
