Washington — On Wednesday, President Donald Trump declared his approval of returning the District of Columbia to direct federal administration, throwing his backing behind legislative plans for a federal takeover of the nation’s capital.
Trump lamented the district’s homelessness and crime while speaking to reporters on Air Force One, stating, “I think we should take over Washington, D.C. — make it safe.” “I believe that we should govern the District of Columbia,” he continued.
Congress already reviews all D.C. laws and has the power to completely revoke them under the city’s Home Rule status. Republicans in Congress have attempted to go farther, removing decades of the city’s limited autonomy and returning it to direct federal administration, as it was at the time of its founding.

Although Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the city’s government, he claimed to personally appreciate District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser.
Trump declared, “They’re not doing the job.” “Too many tents on the lawns — these magnificent lawns — too much crime.”
He maintained that when he hosts foreign leaders in Washington, he cannot allow him to witness homelessness. “You simply cannot allow that to occur,” Trump stated. “You cannot set up tents on all of your lovely lawns and plazas, which were once magnificent.”
