However, the catch is that Orban must moderate some of his outspoken positions. The proposed move comes with its challenges, particularly in reconciling diverse stances on issues like Ukraine. Hungary’s alignment with the Kremlin contrasts with the ECR’s support for Kyiv. The grand coalition’s common goals include empowering European people, reducing EU bureaucracy, enhancing security, and opposing migration. The ECR, boosted by recent polls, could become the third-largest group in the European Parliament if Fidesz joins.
For Giorgia Meloni, a relative newcomer to European politics, taming the long-serving Viktor Orban poses a substantial challenge.
