Dakota Johnson in New York City on April 23, 2026, at the TIME100 Gala.
Actress Dakota Johnson is getting ready to move out of her gorgeous midcentury modern home in Los Angeles, where she has spent the previous ten years. She bought the house with the proceeds from her role in the popular film “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
Johnson, 36, the daughter of Hollywood icons Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, has now listed the architectural masterpiece for $6 million, almost twice the amount she paid for it in January 2016, after just over ten years of ownership.
Designed by renowned architect Carl Maston, the three-bedroom, three-bathroom home was first constructed in 1947. According to its listing, it is a “masterclass in California modernism where warm woods, poured concrete, and wood-framed glass walls dissolve the boundary between indoors and out.”
After buying the house, Johnson transformed it into her ideal haven by working with the well-known design firm Pierce and Ward. She later featured the project in an Architectural Digest photo shoot.

The actress proudly displayed some of her most treasured personal belongings that she had filled the house with during the 2020 photo shoot, such as a note from her grandmother Tippi Hedren, a picture from her 2015 “Saturday Night Live” appearance, and paintings by artists like David Hockney and Harmony Korine.
The listing photos of the slightly over 3,200-square-foot home, which is tucked away on a peaceful cul-de-sac in West Hollywood, show many of those personal effects. The “Materialists” star once referred to the property as a “tree house” due to the surrounding leafy trees.
It’s interesting to note that just six years after Johnson told Architectural Digest that she would probably “never want to sell” the property because she fell in love with it the moment she took a tour, she decided to list it with Ruby Fay of Engel & Volkers Beverly Hills. She told the newspaper, “I was drawn to it right away because it was cozy and clean.” “I thought, ‘I’ll never want to sell this place.'”
The actress went on to say that she believed that “it would be healthy to have a base,” especially while her Hollywood career was taking off, and decided to acquire the house as her first major purchase after landing the role of Anastasia Steele in the “Fifty Shades” trilogy. It’s crucial for me to have a location to go and for it to be mine because of my profession and how quickly my schedule might change,” she stated. “In a psychological sense, I’m anchored. This location serves as my anchor.
Johnson explained that she fell in love not only with the house itself but also with its intriguing past, which included Maston’s close ties to fellow midcentury modern pioneers Richard Neutra and John Lautner. She mentioned that the property was the second she saw during her house hunt.Lautner, Neutra, and Maston were friends, and they would all go to Musso & Frank’s together because they were all smitten with the hostess. This was the home they shared after Carl married her, she disclosed.
Many of the most striking features from Maston’s original design, such as the “expansive glass walls” that open up directly to the backyard and swimming pool, as well as the wood walls, exposed beams, and striking red brick, have been preserved by Johnson despite a thorough renovation of the house.
However, other areas required more extensive renovations; designer Emily Ward explained that the second floor’s original cork flooring “wasn’t salvageable,” even though she acknowledged that it “was really cool.” Rather, she and Louisa Pierce, one of her cofounders, replaced the material with more resilient hardwood flooring at the upper level.
The main suite, which has a spacious bedroom, an enormous walk-in closet, and a sophisticated bathroom painted in a bespoke pink color inspired by a garment she had from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s fashion business, The Row, received particular attention from Johnson.
She also included gigantic “double sinks,” which she had previously joked were the “key to a healthy relationship,” and a massive soaking tub with a large door to the outside in the middle of the room.
Concrete flooring in the main living area, on the other hand, gives the otherwise organic area an industrial sense, resulting in the ideal combination of aesthetics.

However, Maston’s focus on obfuscating the distinction between interior and outdoor spaces persisted. The description states, “The main living level is striking in its restraint: expansive glass walls on two sides open directly onto the swimmer’s pool, flooding the interiors with natural light and creating an effortless dialogue between architecture and landscape.”
Situated on slightly more than 0.2 “lush and layered” acres, the property’s exterior has a swimming pool, a fire pit, a grilling area, many patios, and outdoor entertainment areas, including an elevated perch with a view of the entire rear.

The actress, who just signed on as a new spokesmodel for Calvin Klein, has not publicly disclosed the reasons behind her decision to sell the property, although rumors surfaced in October that she had bought a new home in the upscale Outpost Estates neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Johnson reportedly spent $5.3 million for a gorgeous Mediterranean-style home that was first constructed in the 1950s but has recently undergone an exquisite refurbishment, according to Star Magazine.
According to property records, the home in question, which is over 3,500 square feet in size and has four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, was bought through a trust that is connected to the same trust Johnson used to buy the house she is now listing.
Anthony Bonsignore, Johnson’s accountant, oversees both trusts. Among his clients are Sterling K. Brown, David Harbour, John McEnroe, and Greta Gerwig.

Since acquiring her midcentury modern home, Johnson has made investments in a number of other properties. In 2020, she and her ex partner, Coldplay star Chris Martin, bought a property in Malibu.
Through a trust connected to the musician’s longstanding business manager, the couple purchased the large home for $12.5 million; however, little over a year later, they sold it for a significantly greater sum of $14.4 million.
After eight years together, Johnson and Martin ended their on-again, off-again romance in 2025. According to reports at the time, they couldn’t agree on plans for their future together.

Since then, the actress has been connected to musician Role Model, whose true name is Tucker Pillsbury. Sources informed People magazine in April that the couple had been dating since the end of 2025 and that they were “taking things slow.” She has not yet commented on the romance.
Griffith, Johnson’s mother, did seem to endorse the musician, saying in a video shared by the gossip account DeuxMoi that she found him “fabulous.”
