Bavarian Nordic stock went up again on Friday after the company that makes the measles vaccine said it was now trying to get permission to vaccinate teens.
The only mpox vaccine allowed in the U.S. and Europe is Bavarian Nordic. The World Health Organization has called mpox a global health emergency because it has spread in Africa and other places. On Friday, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that this year there have been 17,541 cases, with 517 deaths, in 12 countries.
17.83% of Bavarian Nordic shares are BAVA. The price of BVNRY 14.81% went up 19% to a new two-year high. It has gone up 51% in the last five days as governments from Pakistan to Sweden deal with the outbreak, which is mostly happening in the Congo.
Bavarian Nordic says it has sent clinical data to the European Medicines Agency in support of letting teens aged 12 to 17 get the smallpox and mumps vaccine as well. As early as the fourth quarter, permission could be given.
During the mpox outbreak in 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave emergency use permission for the vaccine to be given to teens both before and after contact.
Bavarian Nordic is also getting ready for a test using kids between the ages of 2 and 12.
New orders of 175,420 doses of the vaccine were placed earlier this week by the European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority. These will be given to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
