Alexei Navalny, the prominent domestic opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, passed away on Friday while serving a lengthy prison term at the IK-3 penal colony north of the Arctic Circle in Kharp. The Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District officially announced his death at 2:19 pm Moscow time on Feb. 16.
Quoting the announcement, “On Feb. 16, 2024, in penal colony number 3, convict Navalny A.A. felt unwell after a walk, almost immediately losing consciousness. The medical staff of the institution arrived immediately, and an ambulance team was called. All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, which did not give positive results. Doctors of the ambulance stated the death of the convict. The causes of death are being established.”
Navalny’s wife, Yulia, expressed skepticism about the news initially, citing Russia’s history of misinformation. However, Navalny’s spokeswoman later confirmed his death. The official cause of death was initially stated as “sudden death syndrome,” a vague term encompassing various cardiac syndromes leading to sudden cardiac arrest and death. An unidentified source suggested Navalny died from a blood clot.
The location of Navalny’s body remains unclear, creating further controversy. Despite his mother being informed that the body was in Salekhard, the morgue there denied having it. Officials later stated that the body would not be released until the investigation was complete, contradicting earlier claims of no criminality.
Novaya Gazeta reported that Navalny’s body might be at the morgue in the Salekhard District Clinical Hospital, noting signs of bruising consistent with a seizure and attempted heart massage. The reason behind his heart stopping remains unclear.
Navalny’s health had been a concern, given the harsh conditions of Russian prisons. He had faced punishment, including solitary confinement, and his team had repeatedly raised fears of harm or death. The Polar Wolf colony, where he was held, is known as one of Russia’s toughest prisons.
The day before his death, Navalny was seen joking during a court video link. Reports indicated the court session resulted from an “argument” with a prison officer. Russian prisons, notorious for their brutality, had been a source of concern for Navalny and his team.
Less than a year ago, Navalny’s team revealed he suffered severe stomach pain in jail. His outspoken comments on prison conditions, including the lack of teeth due to poor nutrition, shed light on the challenges within Russia’s prison system. The circumstances surrounding Navalny’s death raise questions and demand a thorough investigation into the events leading to his untimely demise.
