In a major safety move, Volkswagen is initiating a recall of over 261,000 vehicles in the U.S. to address a concerning fuel pump problem that poses a serious risk of fires.
Affected Models and Years
The recall encompasses specific Audi A3s and various VW models, including Golfs, GTIs, Golf Sportwagens, Jettas, all from model years 2015 through 2020. Notably, all the vehicles subject to the recall are equipped with front-wheel drive.
Fuel Leak Threat
According to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue revolves around a faulty pump seal that can result in fuel leakage from a charcoal canister within the emissions control system. The agency emphasizes that leaked fuel significantly elevates the potential for a fire.
Remedial Action
To rectify the problem, Volkswagen is implementing a comprehensive fix. Dealers will replace the pump, located inside the fuel tank, at zero cost to the owners. Notification letters will be dispatched to affected vehicle owners, commencing on April 12.
Recall Background
This recall marks the second instance for many vehicle owners. In 2016, VW recalled around 110,000 cars due to the same fuel pump issue. However, the company later discovered that the replacement pumps from the initial recall were also prone to failure.
Safety Investigation
Following 79 complaints of fuel leaks received from owners, U.S. safety regulators initiated an investigation into the matter last year. Volkswagen’s documents reveal 1,410 warranty claims related to the issue, spanning repair dates from May 2016 through December of the previous year. Fortunately, no incidents of fires linked to the problem have been identified.
