On Monday, Nvidia Corp. stock was the biggest winner in the chip industry, shooting to levels that marked a new high point.
Before today, only Apple Inc. AAPL 0.63% had a market capitalisation of more than $3.5 trillion at the end of the year. Now Nvidia NVDA 4.14% has joined that group. Dow Jones Market Data says that the company’s market value at the end of Monday was $3.525 trillion.

So that Nvidia could reach a market value of $3.5 trillion, its shares had to end the day at $142.682. Instead, they ended the day at $143.71, with a late rise. As a whole, the company did the best in the PHLX Semiconductor Index SOX 0.13%, rising 4.1%. Nvidia stock also rose more than any other stock in the S&P 500 SPX -0.18% that day.
Apple became the first company to reach a market value of $3.5 trillion on July 9. Nvidia is the second-largest U.S. company by market cap, after Apple. Apple is worth $3.6 trillion right now.
Nvidia didn’t become worth $3 trillion until June of this year. At that time, the company was worth more than Apple. Microsoft Corp. (MSFT 0.15%) was the most valuable U.S. company at the time, but it has since lost value. On July 5, it reached a high point with a market cap of $3.475 trillion.
