It’s not quite revolutionising the cable bundle, but it’s pretty close.
Walt Disney Co. and Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. are setting aside their rivalry to collaborate on a new streaming bundle that offers Disney+, Hulu, and Max.
The two media giants revealed on Wednesday afternoon that the new bundle will be available starting this summer. In addition to other features, the package would bring together the Marvel universe from Disney+ and the DC universe from Max. Disney, WBD, and Fox Corp. are collaborating to launch a joint sports-streaming service in the near future.
“This new bundle with Max will provide subscribers with an expanded range of options and enhanced value,” stated Joe Earley, Disney Entertainment’s direct-to-consumer president on Wednesday.
JB Perrette, WBD’s CEO of global streaming and games, expressed confidence in the new bundle’s ability to attract more subscribers and improve customer retention. He described it as a significant step forward for the industry.
At present, Hulu is priced at $7.99 per month for the ad-supported version and $17.99 for the ad-free option. Disney+ offers an ad-supported plan for $7.99 and an ad-free plan for $13.99. Meanwhile, Max has an ad-supported plan priced at $9.99 and an ad-free plan available for $15.99.
Earlier Wednesday, Bloomberg News reported that Warner Bros. Discovery is exploring avenues to reduce expenses, including in its streaming operations. Additionally, it was mentioned that the company intends to increase prices for Max.
Last year, Disney increased its prices and introduced two new bundles. One bundle includes ad-free Disney+ and Hulu for $19.99 per month, while the other bundle offers ad-supported Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ for $14.99 per month.
Disney’s quarterly earnings report on Tuesday had a mixed outcome, causing a significant drop in its stock value. However, there was a positive development in its streaming business, which is steadily moving towards profitability and aims to achieve it by the end of the year.
Customers can purchase the new package from any of the three streaming platform’s websites, which offer both ad-supported and ad-free plans. The prices were not disclosed, but the companies have stated that more information will be made available in the upcoming months.
