In a legal victory for Facebook-parent Meta, a Brazilian court has overturned a ruling that had prohibited the tech giant from using its name in the country due to a trademark dispute with another company.
The court’s decision, delivered on Friday, marks a significant turnabout after Meta was ordered in late February to cease using its name in Brazil within 30 days. The initial ruling came following a claim by a Brazilian computer services provider, which argued it held rights to the name and had suffered legal ramifications due to the confusion with the U.S. company.
“In a statement, the Brazilian Meta said it owned the name’s rights in Brazil, adding it believed the law should be followed ‘regardless of business decisions made by groups that want to operate in our country,'” the article stated.
Despite this victory, Meta still has the option to appeal the decision, leaving the legal battle potentially ongoing.
The rebranding of Facebook to Meta in 2021 aimed to shift focus towards building the “metaverse,” a virtual shared space.
